David Yurman

David Yurman (1942 – ) A native of New York City, sculptor David Yurman and his wife, Sybil, a painter, launched their brand in 1980. Their collaborations create jewelry that are both fashion statements and works of art.

Yurman apprenticed for sculptors. He dropped out of New York University to travel and indulge his creativity. He met his wife and future business partner, Sybil Kleinrock, during this time. In 2003, their son Evan, now in his early 30s, joined the company. A horse lover, the elder Mr. Yurman has incorporated a thoroughbred theme in many of his designs.

The Cable bracelet—a twisted helix adorned with finial gemstones—was David Yurman’s first celebrated design. Introduced in 1983, it was an immediate success. To this day, it remains a beloved jewelry design. 

As both artist and artisan, David Yurman is involved in the entire creative process from initial sketch to finished piece. Among his staff are some of the world’s best craftspeople who incorporate fine precious metals, rare gemstones, and unconventional materials in the jewelry released under the David Yurman name.

In 1980, Yurman won the Intergold Award from the World Gold Council for a gold wire and diamond necklace design that anticipated his iconic cable motif. Since then, he’s won many additional awards. In 2013 he was the recipient of the Annual Visionaries! Award from the Museum of Arts and Design.

Many prominent supermodels such as Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, and Kate Upton have appeared in David Yurman advertising campaigns. Celebrities drawn to Yurman’s seemingly effortless American luxury include Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, Carrie Underwood, Queen Latifah, Liam Hemsworth, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Nick Jonas.
