Denny Wong Designs (Est. 1986) is headquartered in Hawaii despite the fact that its founder and namesake, was born and raised in Hong Kong. Wong has made his love for his adopted home of Hawaii the focus of his jewelry designs.
Most designs reflect marine life and nautical accents. His Tropical Memories Collection was inspired by native Hawaiian flora and fauna including hibiscus, cherry blossoms, and palm trees.
Wong’s other collections feature starfish, sand dollars, dolphins, white tail, octopus, jellyfish, crabs, turtles, seals, and tide pools. Wong’s most popular ring collection, Plumeria features sand blasted petals with polished edges decorated with diamonds and/or other precious gems.
Before becoming a master jeweler, Denny Wong was an apprentice model maker at a factory called GBB Pacifica. It was there that he honed his skills and eventually became a master jeweler. To enhance his skills, he joined the Hawaii Jewelers Association in 1986. He also made frequent trips to Hong Kong to take classes and participate in trainings to broaden his range. It is a practice he continues to this day.
Though he is a traditionalist, Wong has begun to use modern techniques that incorporate computer software and lasers to make his pieces more precise and to improve their visual appeal.
Wong’s breakout piece was a Plumeria bracelet he crafted to look like a lei. In a Hawaii Magazine interview, Wong said, “Flowers, like the plumeria, are one of the most beautiful in Hawaii. The first thing many people receive when they come to Hawaii is a plumeria lei.” Not only do his collections reflect the beauty of Hawaii, they call attention to the island’s colors and shapes.
