After Donna completed her undergraduate studies in Geology and Engineering, studying studio art and jewelry design at the Fashion Institure of Technology (FIT) became her next goal. She honed her skills beginning with an entry level position at H. Stern, then at Tiffany & Co. and later at Lazare Kaplan International.
Donna met Alex Vock in 1984 while working in the fine jewelry trade in New York City. With extensive experience in diamonds, colored stones, pearls, vintage jewelry and all aspects of jewelry fabrication, the two shared their love for the rare, the exotic and the world’s most collectible gems and jewelry. It is not only what brought them together, but it is what cements their relationship with their clients.
Alex Vock is a treasure hunter; a world renowned expert in colored stones with a passion for vintage jewelry. He is recognized as a leader in natural pearl identification and evaluation, as well as a trusted dealer of natural color sapphires, Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, and vintage cut diamonds. Alex has a midtown New York City office, ProVockative Gems Inc.
According to her official website, “Donna Vock founded her company, Donna Vock Designs and Consulting LLC, as a New Canaan CT based advisory business [to] serve jewelry retailers, manufacturers and collectors around the globe. Perhaps now better known for Vock and Vintage, her by-appointment-only salon in midtown NYC, she also helps manage the global gem business ProVockative Gems, founded in 1990 by her husband. Donna’s growing appreciation for period jewelry and its relevance in world cultures fuels her own passion for collecting.
“Inspiration for her original contemporary collections stems from a variety of sources, most notably the landscapes and seascapes of her childhood in Long Island where a strong sense of scale, color and texture were always at play. The influence of Native American textiles, art and culture are recognizable in the geometry of much of her work, while the pop art movement and vivid use of color by graffiti artists popular during her teenage years are [also] evident. Music plays a strong role in her creative process, where the rhythm and flow of the blues, and soul favorites are captured in metal and stone.”
In her original, contemporary works, Donna creates one-of-a-kind pieces using collectible gems of all varieties for clients who share her appreciation for the rare, the handmade, and unique. Working with each client to capture their own personal style, each piece fits the contour and enhances the body.
With experience in nearly every aspect of jewelry creation, from rough material to finished piece, Donna worked her way to a place among the industry’s elite. Her one-of-a-kind inspired works of art have evolved into colorful collections. The Carousel Collection evokes a sense of whimsy and features handcrafted charm bracelets of keshi pearls, brightly colored gemstones, and gold. The Carnivale Collection is reminiscent of the glamour of the Piazza San Marco, while the Canopy Collection captures the essence of the coastal rain forest of Central America. There is also the Lyrical Collection that is Donna’s interpretation of day-into-evening jewelry that goes from one occasion to another.
Donna caters to the woman who embraces her individuality, be it classic or eclectic, and who seeks to bring out her own inner beauty. Donna believes adventure and expression go hand-in-hand. Her creations include bracelets; brooches; charms, jewelry that consists of pins, rings, necklaces, clip earrings as well as ear studs. Her mark consists of the letter “D” and the letter “V” and the name “Donna Vock”.
A Donna Vock piece begins with specific inspiration, goes to pencil and paper, and ends at a master jeweler’s bench. Along with an impressive range of one of a kind modern masterpieces, she is also known for re-imagining legacy jewels and redesigning them for today’s style. Her bespoke service is retained by women nationwide.
Donna’s favorite part of the creative journey is presenting a client with the final piece, usually at personal appearance trunk shows or private appointments, and also through her online Boutique. You may also see Donna’s collections on online shops such as 1stDibs.com and Gilt.com.
Among her notable pieces is a Cabochon-cut, circular-shaped blue chalcedony and South Sea pearl ear clips in 18k white gold with omega-style clip backs. Donna has also created 18-karat gold and diamond owl cuff links that have chrysoberyl eyes.
Another creation is a South Sea Cultured Pearl, Wood, and Gold Bracelet. The bracelet features South Sea cultured pearls accented by maple and rosewood beads, forming a single knotted strand, and completed by an 18k gold clasp and accents, marked D, Vock, whose gross weight is 65.30 grams and whose dimension are 9 inches x 3/4 inches.
Also notable is a diamond, platinum and emerald ring as well as a diamond and sapphire ring. Another exceptional ring is one set with a sapphire of stunning hue. Various colored gems are cleverly set into the framework of the gallery, invisible until the ring is turned upside down.
A pendant in what appears to be both cabochon and faceted aquamarine, diamonds and moonstone is also an outstanding example of Donna’s creations.
Donna is a member of the American Society of Jewelry Historians, as well as The Fashion Group International, where she was honored in 2007.
