Gold leaf is gold that has been worked into thin sheets by goldbeating and is generally used for gilding. These days, it can be in beauty products and even chocolate. Founder of Évocateur, Barbara Ross-Innamorati, has always been passionate about gold leaf; the way it seems to transform an object from the mundane to the dazzling.
When she was 16 years old, Barbara attended an exhibition featuring Gustav Klimt’s works from his “Golden Phase”, that heavily utilized gold leaf. The most famous of those works are “The Kiss” and “Judith I.” These paintings gifted Barbara with her love of gold leaf and its transformative properties. After abandoning her investment banking career, she decided to make this love a full-time occupation.
After months of intense study and testing, Barbara crafted a proprietary flecking process that became the trademark of Évocateur’s jewelry. From its website: “Évocateur…reminisces the past with exquisite images and hand set vintage treasures, while celebrating the present in 22k gold leaf brilliance. Each piece conjures a story that’s yours to tell…tales of ancient times and memories of favorite places…the magic of new love…the glimmer of dreams just begun.”
Évocateur’s designs find their inspiration in Barbara’s treks through Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. Each piece is created by hand over a period of 7 days in their Connecticut workshop to allow the resin they use in each layer to dry. The line features belts, bangles, necklaces all gilded with gold leaf. Their popular one-of-a-kind cuffs have been worn by Katie Couric and ESPN’s Sage Steel and touted by InStyle Magazine and Vogue Paris.
Évocateur items can be purchased in fine retailers around the globe and even on cruise ships. Custom pieces can be ordered from their website. They also attracted industry attention and was a JCK Jewelers’ Awards finalist; also placing first and second place five years running.
Despite the success of her brand, Ross-Innamorati still works hard to promote it. She attends a few trades shows a year, because she and her team are aware of the Évocateur style, which features “a refined eclecticism which reflects our love of the traditional and the ancient, blended with the modern and contemporary.”
