Hilary Finck Jewelry

Hilary Finck Jewelry (Est. 2018) Designer, metalsmith, and owner of her self-named company, Hilary Finck designs and hand-crafts all Hilary Finck jewelry in her San Francisco studio. Her designs are a combination of modernism and art deco. It is the artist’s intention to brighten things up with pops of color and her desire to transform raw metal by hand hammering. One design influences another, the next, and so on. Hilary’s jewelry is unique, kinetic, and imbued with a feminine spirit that wants to be worn.

Hilary studied jewelry design and metalsmithing at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. When she moved to San Francisco in 2000, she apprenticed for two years with Peter and Dan Macchiarini at Macchiarini Creative Design then went on to start her own studio. Hilary has taught jewelry design and metalsmithing classes at the Palo Alto Art Center in Palo Alto, California and at the Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Hilary’s plique-a-jour jewelry is a modern take on a centuries-old enameling technique. French for “letting in daylight”, plique-a-jour is a time-intensive process where transparent enamel is inlayed into open spaces and repeatedly fired in a kiln until the artist achieves the desired results.

Hilary’s plique-a-jour “dots” are her signature design. When illuminated by light, the dots provide a brilliant and surprising pop of color. When not captured in light, the pieces have an elegance that stands on its own. In Hilary's plique-a-jour jewelry each piece is a statement and has a classic aesthetic that never goes out of style.

Nearly every piece of jewelry that comes out of Hilary’s studio has at least one element that has been hand hammered. Hammering is not just a sculptural design technique for her, but it also gives the metal durable flexibility and strength. Hammering literally moves metal. Hilary’s trusty planishing hammer is her ‘go-to’ for flattening and forging. Also, an array of cross peens create different textures and make fold-forming possible. Hammering is essential to Hilary’s designs and clearly demonstrates that each piece is handmade and carefully considered.

Hilary personally makes every piece of jewelry to order, therefore each piece is a one-of-a-kind.

The Hand Hammered Collection is an expression of Hilary’s love of metalsmithing. With an array of hammers and dapping tools, Hilary moves metal to create sculptural organic shapes and kinetic motifs. Nearly every piece of jewelry that comes out of Hilary’s studio has at least one element that has been hand hammered.

The Hand Hammered Collections include earrings, chains, necklaces, chains, studs, cuffs, bangles, bands, bracelets, rings, and studs. The Plique a jour Collection has collars, bangles, rings, earrings, hoops, oval orbs, chandelier earrings, chains, necklaces, rings, pendants, and bangles.

The Captured Collections offers necklaces, pendants, dusters, talismans, and chains.

Hilary also creates wedding bands with soft curves, clean lines, and classic designs. Each ring is carved by hand per custom project. Hilary’s wedding bands are heirloom pieces that are comfortable and easy to wear every day. As of May 2020, Hilary’s official website promises that more wedding band designs will appear in summer 2020.
