Jemma Wynne (Est. 2007) is a “go to” brand that creates jewelry for women who, in the words of entrepreneurs and founders, Jenny Klatt and Stephanie Wynne Lalin, “... desire a sophisticated look that declares a strong fashion sensibility yet maintains a casual ease. It’s rich, but comfortable.”
Stephanie and Jenny, each quite young when they developed their unique personal aesthetics, take inspiration from around the globe. Moved by her extensive travels throughout Europe while an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, Jenny began designing intricately detailed mosaic art, tiled furniture, and jewelry that she transformed into a successful, growing business.
Inspired by a small bead store in Washington, D.C. that she frequented while studying graphic design at American University, Stephanie began to create unique custom pieces that she sold successfully in stores throughout New York and New Jersey.
Jenny and Stephanie’s paths crossed in 2005 while working together in product development at a fine jewelry house in New York City. It was there that they realized their shared design philosophy and launched a collaboration that would ultimately become Jemma Wynne.
Recounting Jemma Wynne’s early history in a May 2019 article in Coveteur, Stephanie said, “We launched in 2007 when the economy crashed … But launching during that time gave us space to find our way and to figure out who we are…. Launching during that time gave us more time to work on our brand and create a really organic relationship with stores, whereas sometimes in a busier, booming time you don’t have that.”
Jenny added, “I would say the foundation of our business was based off of casual luxury. We always say we’re the cashmere hoodie of jewelry. You may be wearing this huge stack of gold and diamond jewelry, but it’s not supposed to feel overdone, it’s supposed to feel more casual but with a really rich material.
“One of the major things for us are our open bangles. At the time we designed them, no one else was doing them. We showed them to every store and no one was interested. No one liked it. They didn’t understand what they were, and they didn’t see their customers liking them. But we just kept pushing them and designing new versions and designing colored stones in many different ways and over time they caught on. We became known for our bangle stacks and then we’ve kinda branched out since then.”
That branching out includes creating visionary jewelry designs that are the driving force behind each of the Jemma Wynne collections. The two women work side by side in their NYC studio combining their shared personal styles of relaxed femininity and classic polish. While each collection has unique design elements, the collections also work together and can be layered and mixed.
The juxtaposition of precious gemstones and “ready to wear” sensibility results in jewelry collections that are classic and chic.
Retail prices range from $450 – $30,000 with pieces priced up to $250,000. Jemma Wynne also offer the experience of designing one-of-a-kind bespoke pieces with their collaborative designers. They work closely with their clients to craft unique, custom engagement rings, wedding bands, and other pieces of fine jewelry including bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.
In the Coveteur interview, Jenny recalled the first pieces of jewelry she fell in love with. One was a Tiffany charm bracelet. Stephanie remembered one of the bracelets worn by her mother that was passed down from her grandmother and made in the ’50s. It was a big woven-looking chain that had charms. There was a calendar with the birthdates and the birthstones on the date in the calendar, and a little box with a little dollar folded up inside.
It is that aesthetic that drives Jemma Wynne creations: Everything is meant to be special and meaningful so that when wearing it one carries the family history with them,
Together, Jenny and Stephanie breathe fresh life into precious jewels by adding their unique perspective and unexpected detail to all their creations. From the single earring with playful gemstones to the more classic gold pendant with dazzling diamonds, petite designs from Jemma Wynne boast a regal elegance especially in the brand’s pearl pieces.
Today, Jemma Wynne has a growing roster of celebrity fans including January Jones, Rihanna, Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Camila Alves, Reese Witherspoon, and Olivia Palermo.
