Maria Canale

Maria Canale (Est. 2016) For more than twenty-five years, this United States based designer worked for world-famous jewelry brands such as Tiffany&Co, Mikimoto, Movado, and Harry Winston. According to her Linked In profile, “Maria C. Canale … got her start in the business at the early age of 13, apprenticing at the bench for an Armenian jeweler (part of an after school goldsmith apprenticeship), then went on to study metalsmithing at The School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology and The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City.

“Her clients include both retail jewelry companies and manufacturers. Her services encompass: analyzing existing lines and manufacturing capabilities, designing collections, overseeing model making, overseeing production, working directly with Retailer’s/Manufacturer’s clients and sales force, [and] developing marketing and advertising plans.”

She began studying as a professional jeweler before enrolling in any course, and long before she discovered the delight of jewelry design at FIT. She soon realized that by transferring her imaginary jewelry pieces to paper, she could materialize her thoughts, even if she couldn’t create with her own hands what she imagined. Maria drew all night after her first lesson at FIT, a pastime she continues now.

Known as a “Jeweler’s Jeweler,” Maria Canale launched eponymous jewelry line in 2014 after many years of designing pieces for world-renowned brands. Maria’s designs celebrate classic American childhood summers in Rhode Island, combined with the energy and sophistication of a modern Manhattan entrepreneur.

For years she remained in the shadow of popular brand names although thousands of people were adorned with pieces she conceived. In 2016, Maria decided to launch a jewelry brand that would bear her name.

In December 2014, she told Alive Magazine, “I started working at the bench when I was 13 years old. I worked with Tiffany’s and did most of their major collections for about 25 years. I draw and paint all of my designs and I love what I do. This [new] collection [for Neiman Marcus] is great because instead of being behind the scenes, it’s something I could put my name on.”

For the quarter of a century Maria worked as a designer, she accumulated a vast amount of professional experience, which, together with her natural talent, allowed her to win over thirty jewelry competitions, including the Diamonds International Award, the Platinum International Award, the Women’s Jewelry Association, Designer of the Year, and the Argyle International Colored Diamond Award, among others. Maria has also received the prestigious American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Award ten times.

Maria’s collections are comprised of rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets intended for engagements, wedding days, anniversaries, birthdays, the birth of a child, graduations, milestones, and promotions. She’s named them Aster, Deco, Drop, The Essentials, Flapper, Hexagon, Hoops, Jubilee, Pyramide, Fringe, Wave, among others. Prices range from under $3000 to $10,000 and above.

Notable pieces include the Aster White Gold Blossom Ring ($12,000) which is comprised of layers of rich rose-cut diamonds that burst into brilliance like fireworks. The arcs of the petals look almost as beautiful in profile like a bloom poised on a delicate pavé split shank. Created in 18K white gold with diamond quality: G-H color, VS clarity, 4.03 carats diamond total weight, the split shank band blossom is 1.25 inches wide.

From the Maria Canale Pastiche collection is a cuff with 4.23 cts of diamonds, necklace with 14.28 cts of diamonds and a ring.

She’s also created Art Deco rings, diamond Aster rings with rose cut diamonds, and the Maria Canale Pyramide cuff bracelets.

Elegance and luxury are among the many elements that attract Maria. These aspects are evident in the refined contours of the Flapper collection’s necklaces, earrings and bracelets, as well as in the clear lines of her Deco diamond jewelry. They’re also unmistakable in the miniature details of her Drops pieces which feature drops of moonstone, and in the three-dimensional and precisely calculated forms of the Pyramide and Hexagon pieces, as well as in the fine stones of her Bespoke collection.

Maria Canale jewels are statement and striking; miniature and delicate; classical and modern; original and traditional. Experts suggest that she is able to create something for literally any mood and outfit while still preserving her staple style of exquisite minimalism.

In addition to the aforementioned pieces, Maria is also known for her Double Bloom Aster hinged collar necklace with round and rose cut diamonds in 18-karat white gold ($16,500), and her Deco Collection which is an homage to the style and craftsmanship of the past. The Deco Cuff was made by hand and is covered in diamonds yet light and easy enough to wear all the time.

The Deco Diamond Mosaic Cuff, features round, brilliant, and pavé set diamonds in 18-karat white gold and is priced at $54,000. A pair of Petit Deco Snowflake earrings that feature wing baguettes and round brilliant diamonds in 18-karat white gold sells for $24,700 and the Starburst Graduated Pastiche drop earring set featuring diamonds in 18-karat white gold is priced at $13,350.

In January 2018, the Windsor Community, a private residential community spanning 425 acres of lush barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, Florida, announced that Maria Canale would be named as the Official Luxury Jeweler Sponsor for the 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup. Maria Canale agreed to donate a Starburst Medallion Diamond Drop Necklace and Earrings, valued at $50,000, as the lead item to the charity event’s raffle.

The donated necklace and earrings were on display throughout the Windsor Charity Polo Cup weekend and during the event on Saturday, February 17th. Prior to the festivities, Maria Canale held an in-store, cocktail event at Belle Cose in the nearby Village Shops with a portion of the proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the Alzheimer and Parkinson Association of Indian River County.

Maria’s official website states, “The world of Maria Canale is a celebration of a life well-lived. From the sophistication of the city to the relaxed comfort of a beach house, it’s a new definition of luxury. Modern but relaxed. Timeless, yet in tune with the way a woman lives today.

“I want my designs to inspire you to live every day as a celebration, creating beautiful memories with the people you care about,” says Maria, who is a wife and mother of two, lives in Manhattan and at the beach, in Watch Hill beach, Rhode Island.
