Nettie Rosenstein

Born March 13th, 1890 in Salzburg, Austria, Nettie Rosenstein was an American fashion designer who had based herself in New York City, New York between 1913 and 1975. Rosenstein is best known for her costume jewelry pieces and array of little black dresses. Her and her family immigrated to America in the 1980s and settled down in Harlem, New York. She married Saul Rosenstein in 1913, who managed a women’s underwear business, and she began making dresses in her home. She was contacted by the I. Magnin department store in 1919 and began wholesaling her designs, but by 1921 she was able to own her own store. In 1937, Life Magazine named her own of the most highly regarded American designers and was one of the first to receive the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1938.  Her brand became famous for creating the little black dress concept and a wide range of costume jewelry.
