Marco Bicego

Marco Bicego (Est. 2000 – ) In the relatively short history of his self-named business, Marco Bicego has established his brand with sensuous, beautiful work that blends old world Italian hand craftsmanship with tradition, passion and imagination. He is the second generation of a gold smithing family. His father established a jewelry company in 1988. In 2000, Bicego began his own brand using his face, energy, enthusiasm.

Bicego says, “The inspiration behind the creation of my jewels is rooted in my Venetian origins and the natural settings surrounding my territory. I have always believed in quality and in the secrets of Italian jewelry. The Marco Bicego [collections] combine old world tradition with contemporary design and convey the typical values and details of ‘Made in Italy.’ The distinct uniqueness of my timeless jewels can be described through artisanal craftsmanship and imperfect shapes, always made in 18 karat gold.”

Holding to traditional aesthetics, Bicego’s designs feature timeless, semi-precious stones with each piece handmade using techniques passed down from his father. Honoring this legacy, Bicego stresses that his designs, while inspired by nature and emotion, are 100-percent handcrafted in Italy and capture simple, unique, artesian qualities that are often given scant attention in jewelry design.

Bicego has a variety of collections that represent his signature style. He is most well-known for his unique guitar string coils, dynamic use of colored gemstones, and hand-engraving. His jewelry is youthful and stylish or elegant and classical, but always evocative.

The guitar string coil look is a spin-off from his father’s vintage omega necklaces. Bicego’s early collections include Madagascar and Santorini, which dance and play on the skin.

In early 2002, Marco’s line evolved to include the successful twisted gold of the Marrakech Collection; a look inspired by the customs of North African tribes. Marco Bicego has further complimented this group with the flattened Goa Coil and exotic Dune collection.

Currently, Marco Bicego offers more than a dozen collections including Lunaria. Luce, Jaipur, Siviglia, Cairo, Delicati, Paradise, Murano, and Unico. However, it is the Marrakech collection that is the defining Marco Bicego signature style and recognized for its timeless elegance and contemporary flavor.

The brand’s signature hand engraving is made using the bulino, an ancient tool devised for the art of hand-carving and gives gold a fine, brushed texture. The finish is often what sets Marco Bicego creations apart and makes each piece unique. Hand twisted coils give the jewelry its eye-catching look and appeal.

The inner coil is the key to the luxuriousness of these hand twisted designs. It is made from a thick strand of gold which is then tightly wound with 18K gold thread. The resulting coil is then manipulated into various shapes and finishes.

On Bicego’s official website, he states, “I personally take a lot of care and am very passionate in the choice and composition of each and every stone chosen for the creation of my fine jewelry. The delicate hues and different shades of our exclusively cut, natural gemstones deliver one-of-a-kind individuality to each piece of jewelry.”

Marco Bicego Italian jewelry can be found at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue among others. In 2013, Bicego opened a shop-space inside Bloomingdale’s flagship New York City store; a prime location for luxury brands. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the approximately 120-square-foot boutique offers selections from collections Bicego has created since 2000, ranging in price from $2,700 to $90,000.

Marco Bicego also has stores in Verona, Italy, Tokyo, Budapest, Greece, and another two inside Harvey Nichols in England. Today, the Marco Bicego brand is found in over 1,000 of the finest jewelers around the world. The company now includes 120 employees and plans further expansion.

Discussing his jewelry and designing rationale in 2012, Bicego said, “It’s about culture, and spirit. Creating something new… I want to create everyday pieces — for both day and evening wear. When you wake up in the morning, you choose your attire and jewelry based on how you feel; there is an emotional connection, [and an opportunity] to interpret [a piece of jewelry] your own way.”

Bicego’s collections are designed to be worn together and have a signature look of hand engraved gold both lovely to the eye and the touch.
