Frederick “Fred” Davis (1877 – 1961) American designer who came to Mexico City in 1910 many years before William Spratling. Recognizing a keen interest in silver jewelry, he began to create his own designs and works. He managed the antiques and fine crafts department for Sandborns, a large retailer in Mexico City, for more than twenty 20 years.
He designed Mexican sterling silver jewelry inspired by pre-Columbian art and ancient symbols. He also developed a network from he bought directly. In creating his own works, he used native materials and blended contemporary American and European designs with indigenous motifs. His work set the stage for those artisans who later became known as The Taxco School.
