Pierre Jaquet-Droz

Pierre Jaquet-Droz, born in 1721 on a farm in La Chaux-de-Fonds, showed a great passion for clockmaking and proved himself to be exquisite in the craft. Between 1738 and 1747, Jacquet-Droz produced many grandfather clocks that were more technologically advanced than any other clocks of his time. He started to expand his watchmaking techniques and these changes attracted many customers. Pierre Jaquet-Droz kickstarted his international career when he took his creations abroad to Spain in 1758. In Spain, Pierre showed King Ferdinand VI his clocks and the king was so impressed, he ended up buying some of his pieces a few days later. For the rest of his career, Pierre never stopped looking for ways to improve watches, clocks or automata. Some of his more famous pieces are The Writer, The Draughtsman, and The Musician. He showed his work to Louis XVI and Marie-Antionette in 1775. He opened a workshop in London in 1774, which he let his son run.
